| Description | A conical mask of bark cloth covering a light cane frame. On the front is a face with a wide open beak-like mouth; sharp teeth formed from thorns or pointed sticks are set into both the lower and upper jaws. The eyes are formed by concentric circles - a black inner circle and a red outer circle, each bordered by a thinner white rim. From the sides of the face two crescentic `wings' extend; alternating strips of bark cloth and tufts of plant fibre hang from the base of each crescent. At the base of the cone is a larger horizontal cane ring, from which fibres to conceal the body of the wearer would once have hung. Near the tip of the cone is another horizontal ring, this one covered with bark cloth. The decoration on the face, wings and upper ring consists of bold painted bands and triangle motifs in red, white and black. |
