| Description | John Webber (1752-1794), British expedition artist and draughtsman to Captain Cook's third expedition in 1776. Webber produced the most complete pictorial illustration of any of Cook's voyages. This scene shows the violent confrontation between Cook's officers and men on the beach at Kealakekua Bay in the Sandwich (Hawaiian) Islands which lead to the death of Cook on 14th February 1779. Hand-coloured engraving. Gift of Horace Fildes, 1937. |
